An eclipse occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily blocked by an obstacle, either when another object comes in front of it, or another object comes between the observer and the object. Eclipse is a type of "syzygy."

The term eclipse is often used to describe either a solar eclipse when the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth's surface or a lunar eclipse when the Moon is in the Earth's shadow. However, this term is also used to describe other events that take place beyond the Earth-Moon system. For example, a planet is shaded by its own Moon, and a moon is shaded by its own planet, or another moon shades a moon. A binary system may also form if the observer's position coincides with the level of the star's orbit. Umbra, penumbra, and antumbra are formed when an opaque object obscures a larger light source.

The shadow area of the Moon is divided into three in a solar eclipse.
• Umbra, in this case, the Moon completely covers the Sun (to be precise, its photosphere)
• The Antumbra extends beyond its tip and remains small to completely cover it, despite being right in front of the Sun.
• Penumbra, in this case, the Moon is only partially in front of the Sun.

Umbra and penumbra can occur during a lunar eclipse. This is because the current diameter of the Earth's point of view from the Moon is four times that of the Sun.

The first contact is when the lunar circle begins to cover the area of the Sun, and the second contact is when the lunar circle completely enters the solar circle, the third contact is when the Sun begins to exit the circle, the fourth and finally the contact is when it finally comes out of the solar circle.

The same terms can be used analogously to describe other eclipses, for example, Deimos passing Mars or Phobos entering Mars' penumbra.

Total eclipses occur when the observer is in the umbra, annual eclipses occur when the observer is in the antumbra, and partial eclipses occur when the observer is in the penumbra.
