It's a bit slow and clanky, but makes getting started a breeze. We probably wouldn't play Catan if it wasn't for this app. We still occasionally go back to different sections to refresh ourselves on the rules. But here lies the problem: the specific sections aren't easy to find, so it takes some tedious exploration. Better controls on the playback and performance improvements would make this app a 5-star. The 4-star is for the usefulness of the app.

Useful way to learn how to set up Catan for game play. I like that both beginner setup (really helpful for first time play) and variable setup (useful for a more advanced setup after you get the hang of the game) are included. The instructions pause after each step to give the players time to complete the step before pressing next to continue.

The only game available for download tutorial is the original Catan. I bought "Starfarers Duel" and it clearly says on the box to use the app for instructions to this game, no instructions. If you're going to advertise on the box maybe be able to actually back it up, just a thought.

Edit: very cool that it's still a work in progress. Will check back in a while. End-edit. Cool that they made a newer version, and the tutorial is great, but this is not an assistant. This is just a tutorial. A good one, but not an assitant. I was looking forward for a 'dice' option. Also some real game "assistant" features would be great - some point counting, including expansions, keeping score for players. Then it would be a real assistant.

Very thorough app, but needs an option to fast skip through the dialog. I was looking for an app to go through the details of Catan which were missing from my manual. Only use this app if you've never played Catan before, then it's a great app. In my case it's way easier to download another version of the manual to resolve an edge case.

Instead of explaining the rules flat out, it makes you setup and play through some of the game slowly explaining it as you go. While I was trying this app my friend read the rulebook and was able to explain the game in 10 min what the app was going to take an hour to do. I would only recommend this if you have a group of people who have all never played, and who also all want to pay attention to the tutorial while it tells you exactly what moves to make for a while.
