I've never played the dragon quest series, this was my first playthrough. Just a game I decided to get while traveling. Simple turn based dungeon crawler. Similar to final fantasy games . Not too much thought into the gear, story was simple. I've beat the game and gone on to DQ2 which is this game, improved and story continued. Looking forward to playing all the games.

I can't comment on this as a port because I never played the original but really enjoyed this. It's basic but it's a blueprint of some of my favourite ever games. It's sort of like an early access version of later Enix/Square games. A good price too, I seem to remember a weekend rental would have been £3 30 years ago and that's what this game is. Had no bugs, had a great time grinding it out and while it's not going to be one I'll likely fire up again over other games, really enjoyed it!

UPDATE: They fixed the controls so my review has been updated. Fantastic game. OLD:: The main controls work fine, but the menu cannot be accessed on the Droid Turbo. Touches on the menu icon are not registered. Other than that, it works great and is a phenomenal harkening back to my first ever RPG.

I have many fond memories of playing this game on the NES so it's awesome that you can get much of the original experience in a mobile app. First off, this game just works: no ads, no account to set up. You start the game and play from start to finish. The controls have some nice quality of life improvements over the original. The dialogue is in a take middle English style true to the original, and its otherwise a joyfully simple RPG.

I first got addicted to the Dragon Quest games with VIII on the Wii. I had been trying to find the first one for years, so I was pretty stoked to see this one. Alas, as others have stated, the menu button doesn't function, you just move right :'( Update; It's fixed and perfect! Thank you for my happy place!

The original adventure that started it all for console RPGs. This is an amazing port from Square Enix and it has optimized controls and feels good to pick up and play. It is a relatively short title (It can literally be completed in a day.), however the bulk of your time will be spent grinding power and looking for clues to defeat the dreaded Dragonlord. This is an excellent game for RPG beginners and those looking to get into the franchise in general. Give it a go!

Know what you're getting into, this game has some very dated and annoying design choices... But it birthed an entire genre and is still easy enough to play and get into to this day. I wouldn't recommend this as anyone's first dragon quest game unless they're in it for the retro appeal, but if you're curious about where the series started this is a good version.

Some may think of this game as an historical relic, very important in shaping and setting the standards for every consequent RPG indeed, but largely irrelevant in today's gaming landscape. I strongly disagree. Even today, especially given this mobile version, this game can very much bring enjoyment to even the most casual dragon quest fans. I know it did to me, and up until this game I had never completed one single game in the franchise (much to my regret). Worth every penny!
