I've been using the SignASL website for a couple of years now, and have found it very useful, but it's on my laptop, so it's less portable than this new app version, which I can take with me everywhere. I really like the fact that the videos repeat automatically, rather than having to press play over and over! Great app!

Right out of the gate and my initial impression? Awesome. I've used a lot of different apps and had connectivity issues and issues with the search engines. I've only used this one briefly but so far my experience has been awesome. I'm just now getting back into sign language after having been fluent when I was a kid. Having not signed for a lot of years my receptive language is poor. It comes back quickly but something like this is essential when you want to look something up fast and accurate.

It's okay. Some of the videos are very small and hard to see. Others are not. The real problem for me is that the signs are performed SO FAST that I have to keep replaying the videos to catch the nuances. Very frustrating. It would be so much better if the signer would perform the sign once, and then do it again in slow motion. And why do most of the signers look so angry all the time? Just sayin'... I won't go into the search glitch because it's been covered by so many others. Needs an update!

Videos won't "activate" until I rotate my phone, no matter which orientation I'm starting in. In both cases the video starts in the middle so you miss the sign, but it does loop. The pause feature also doesn't appear until rotation. This isn't an issue for the front page signs. Large vocab but many words have multiple sign options, so a quick blurb explaining when to use one over another would be nice, especially which are most common. Ones I learn from deaf teachers are often listed lower.

Pros: it's free. Cons: as others have said, videos are small and too fast most of the time. Multiple signs for same word with no explanation about different systems, hard to know which one to actually use. Also everyone is poker faced. Since facial expression is important in communication, makes it quite unhelpful. Deleted it in favour of paid app with slow motion replay option, better quality video, more useful search, ability to save lists, and where the model uses facial expressions.

Why Ask Why

This far it's the best free asl learning/vocabulary app I've used. Gives multiple sign possibilities for each word. Allows access to broad pool of words and phrases. Doesn't have a flurry of pop up ads to sift through when trying to study despite being free which is a pleasant surprise. No app is without flaws but if I take time out of my day to show love/support for one, it's gotta be pretty darn good lol.

This app is great! However, it does need an update and some bug fixes. For instance: every time I go to search for a new word after just searching, it won't bring up the keyboard, and I have to re-open the app in order to search for a new sign. I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem, but it would be wonderful if you can fix it.

I love this ASL dictionary. I would give it 5 stars if only it had my search history. Instead, the home page shows what OTHERS have searched, which does not serve me. In order to learn, I frequently have to search over again MY words I need to re-practice. But it's still my favorite ASL app; I find what I want to say, and see all the various way to express it.
