Santorini is an island spotted approximately 200 km south of the Aegean Sea. It is located in the southeast of the Greek mainland. It is the largest island in a small, circular archipelago of the same name, the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It is the southernmost member of the group of Cyclades islands, with a field of almost 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and inhabitants of 15,550 as per the 2011 census. The municipality of Santorini includes the populated islands of Santorini and Therasia, also the uninhabited isle of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. The total earth area is approximately 90,623 km2 (34,990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira territorial unit.

Santorini was titled by the Latin Empire in the 15th century and referenced Saint Irene from the noun of the old cathedral in the village of Perissa - the name Santorini is an abbreviation of the name Santa Irini. Before that, it was known as Kallístē or Thēra. The name Thera was revived in the nineteenth century as the official name of the island and its main city, but the colloquial name of Santorini is still popularly pronounced.

The enlargement of tourism in recent years has led to the growth of the economy and population. Santorini has been chosen as the best island in the world by many magazines and travel websites such as Travel+Leisure Magazine, BBC, and US News. It is thought to be visited by an estimated 2 million tourists annually.

The island's pumice quarries have been shut down since 1986 to protect the caldera. In 2007, the MS Sea Diamond cruise ship ran aground and sank in the caldera. As of 2019, Santorini has become a special attraction for Asian couples who come to Santorini for pre-wedding photos against the backdrop of the island's landscape.
