Update: They've helped me clear any misunderstandings, and so far, the app is very good for learning new words! Original: It says that you can try it for free, but every button guides you to the subscription page. I completely understand and would support the subscription. But why say that you could try it for free? Additionally, when you pick the yearly subscription, it says that it'll give you 6 months free trial. But when you click it, it changes to 7 days free trial. It's quite misleading.

The app always proceeds to "update database" and this process takes forever or even breaks entirely. If there was an option to at least turn off automatic database update, I'd give this app five stars because it's the best one in the market for learning chinese words. upd. The issue was fixed. Thank you, developers!

Im so utterly disappointed: On my old phone I had the original laoshi app installed.. What I loved most about it was that it was simple uncomplicated & would break down each word for me into into its radicals. Now, it is this horribly complicated site with some mess about lists & when I look up the word, it just only tells me the basic definition -- and no longer provides the breakdown of the radicals inside the characters and word. I miss the old version. Can I please please have that old one!!

What a great app, if only you could add Chinese meaning of words with/instead of translation (quite helpful for higher levels) and the way to save books to my library so that I won't have to search for other lessons again but directly from the saved book.

Pretty good flashcard app that lets you write the characters and listen to pronunciation. What's really nice is there a lot of preloaded flashcards from a long list of textbooks, apps, and HSK lists which is great.

It doesn't say anywhere if it's Mandarin or Cantonese. I assume it's Mandarin then, but would be nice to know, especially for those who don't know the difference. UPD: But I was asking about Mandarin vs Cantonese, not about Traditional vs Simplified. It would be nice to put it into the description that it's for the Mandarin dialect only, but supports both the Simplified and Traditional writing systems. The current description only says HSK but not everyone knows that it refers to Mandarin.
