افتتح الله السورة بالقَسَم إذ أقسم بمتاضدين فقال: (وَالضُّحَى وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى) وهما الضحى وهو وقت شروق الشمس وسطوعها وأقسم بالليل ممّا بعد غروب الشمس وورد جواب القسم بطمأنة النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام أنّ الله لم يتركه ولم يستغنِ عنه كما ادّعى المشركون، فقال: (مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى)

سورة الضحى سورة مكية باتفاق أهل العلم وهي خاصة بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قيل: إن سبب نزولها أن الوحي فتر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأبطأ عنه جبريل عليه السلام فقال المشركون: قد ودع محمد فأنزل الله تعالى:( مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى)
