Across the world, people with disabilities have poorer health outcomes, lower education
achievements, less economic participation, and a higher poverty rate than people without
disabilities. People with disabilities are more likely to be unemployed and generally earn less
even when employed. The main reason for this is not their inability but lack of communication
and connectivity with the outside world and less reach to people. Available solutions like smart
gloves and sticks are costly and unaffordable. Therefore, an affordable and efficient solution is
needed to be designed.
This project aims at developing a simple smart-phone-based networking system for differentlyabled people through the renaissance of technology to build a platform that addresses and
solves problems faced by them, leading to inclusive growth. The App is voice-controlled for
blind people and consists of features like posting advertisements, connecting with clients and,
text recognition. Visually impaired people are often unaware of dangers in front of them, even
in familiar environments. Furthermore, in unfamiliar environments, such people require
guidance to reduce the risk of colliding with obstacles. The app involves real-time obstacle
visualization, which reports objects in their environment. The Application provides a separate
module for mute-deaf people, which comprises features like real-time hand sign language
detection and text conversion for easy communication, gesture-enabled video calling, a
marketplace where these differently-abled people can share/sell/communicate whatever good
they are doing in their field by creating short videos. Thus, this will help them to spread their
word and also help normal by giving a medium to help them and connect with them.
Currently, no application or software provides such a platform to fill this gap. It inspired us to
create signify - an android based networking platform with a real-time sign language
classifier and obstacle visualizer.
