Perioperative Care has been designed as a quick reference of useful topics regarding the surgical patient. Flow-charts and tables with drug descriptions, dosages, and brand names aid in fast decision-making in emergencies, at the patient’s bedside, or during a perioperative office visit. Brand names may vary from country to country.

Topics include preoperative care (antithrombotic and antibiotic prophylaxis, preoperative bowel preparation, prevention of surgical wound infection, etc), postoperative care (analgesia, transfusion of blood products, hydration and fluid therapy, electrolyte and metabolic alterations, management of diabetic or hypertensive patients, postsurgical chylous ascites, etc) and medical emergencies (septic shock, anaphylactic shock, acute pulmonary edema, acute confusional syndrome, etc). Other useful sections are those on normal lab values or frequently used drugs in the postoperative period.
