Are websites and social media apps blocked? Is your network unusually slow? Run OONI Probe to find out! With this app, you will examine the blocking of websites and instant messaging apps, measure your network's speed and performance, and check whether systems that could be responsible for censorship and surveillance are in your network.
OONI Probe is developed by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), a free software project (under The Tor Project) that aims to uncover internet censorship around the world.
Since 2012, OONI’s global community has collected millions of network measurements from more than 200 countries, shedding light on multiple cases of network interference.
Collect evidence of internet censorship
You can check whether and how websites and instant messaging apps are blocked. The network measurement data you will collect may serve as evidence of internet censorship.
Detect systems responsible for censorship and surveillance
OONI Probe tests are also designed to uncover the presence of systems (middleboxes) that could be responsible for censorship and surveillance.
Measure the speed and performance of your network
You can measure the speed and performance of your network by running OONI's implementation of the Network Diagnostic Test (NDT). You can also measure video streaming performance with the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) test.
Open data
OONI publishes network measurement data because open data allows third parties to verify OONI findings, conduct independent studies, and answer other research questions. Openly publishing OONI data also helps increase transparency of internet censorship around the world. You can explore and download OONI data here: https://ooni.io/data/
Free software
All OONI Probe tests (including our NDT and DASH implementations), are based on free and open source software. You can find OONI software projects on GitHub: https://github.com/ooni. Curious to learn how OONI Probe tests work? Learn more: https://ooni.io/nettest/

While it worked, interesting and important I believe. Unfortunately it would get much smaller with wear so would only test web site reachableness for a day or two and then reinstall. Even the settings could not locate or activate options.

An awesome idea but really subpar implementation. 4 times I have run the website block test and in all of them the results were different each time. I later went from the same device on the websites that the app deemed blocked and none of them were. In the end, I can very confidently say that each time the app said that al least 1 site was blocked and each time a different one when in reality none of them are, thus this app can't be used to check internet censorship

Wierd. The old version of this application worked perfectly fine and Flawless even under VPN connections. I took the update.. and its refusing to work on the on the VPN connection. This feature was very important for me because I could test vpns for restriction and cesnors. This app is delevoped by the tor project. And yes it has TRACKERS called Countly and the google Firebase platform one. It has weird permission like receive boot complete. Why? DONT INSTALL

A great way to analyze a network, with lots of results. I've used it to compare different broadband providers, and have found it immeasurably useful as it doesn't just check speed, but also censorship levels and lots more.

For an app run by the Onion network, im surprised and disappointed that the app had trackers. And i am especially disappointed that one of the tracker is Facebook (meta). I mean all the stats from the probe are (unless opted out) automatically sent to you. So whats up with trackers?!

I've found this app very helpful and reliable. Recommend to everyone. Hats off to developers. Middlebox test appeared missing, but not so; it is now bundled with the Performance tests. Excellent app and support.

Works as intended. 30 year net/sysadmin here. Some of the reviews for OONI probe don't make sense, and seem to take advantage of general tech illiteracy about how and what this is scanning. The app explains that these scans will be submitted to their database, and no personal info is contained in those scans, so if you don't want to participate in this, maybe read before installing apps? Just a suggestion, but you shouldnt lie about what the app does to frighten non-tech people.
