NOT JUST ANOTHER MEDITATION APPDon’t think of Waking Up as a conventional meditation app—think of it as a new operating system for your mind, and a guide to living a better life.
We aim to offer a far deeper approach to mindfulness than you’ll find elsewhere—one that fundamentally transforms how you see yourself, and the world around you.
But you’ll also discover life-changing, secular wisdom from top scholars and experts, on everything from sleep and doing good in the world to time management and happiness.
Waking Up is free for anyone who can’t afford it. We never want money to be the reason why someone can’t benefit from what we’ve built.
**Created by Sam Harris
Sam Harris, neuroscientist and best-selling author, built Waking Up to be the resource he wished he’d had when he began exploring meditation over 30 years ago.
Sam only includes those practices and insights he’s found to be utterly life-changing. The same is true for the many teachers, scholars, and experts you’ll meet throughout the app.
**A step-by-step approach to mindfulness
We’ve heard from thousands of members who say they never really understood meditation until they took our 28-part Introductory Course.
Whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner, you’ll dive straight into the deep end of real mindfulness, so you don’t waste any time on the surface.
**Learn the true purpose of meditation
Meditation is about more than just relieving stress, sleeping better, or improving your focus. While it can help you do all of that, our goal is ultimately to help you open the door to a deeper understanding of yourself.
Here, you won’t just uncover simple relaxation techniques —and you won’t find any New Age fluff or religious dogma.
**A place for serious seekers
Explore some of life’s most important questions, on topics like neuroscience, psychedelics, enlightenment, ethics, and Stoicism—from renowned authors and professors like Oliver Burkeman, Michael Pollan, Laurie Santos, Arthur C. Brooks, James Clear, and others.
**In-depth theory and practice
Waking Up explains both the theory and the practice of meditation —so you don’t just learn the “how” of mindfulness, but also the “why.”
You’ll be guided by prominent figures like Joseph Goldstein, Diana Winston, Adyashanti, Jayasāra, and Henry Shukman, who teach a wide range of contemplative practices, including Vipassana, Zen, Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, and more.
**Timeless insights, modern lens
Within Waking Up, you’ll find some of the most profound spiritual teachings from throughout history—those that have stood the test of time. And you’ll hear from historic voices like Alan Watts.
But we also pressure-test ancient wisdom against modern science, so you won’t find outlandish claims or anything we haven’t found to be empirically true.
**A comprehensive guide
Waking Up supports your growth and development in a number of different ways. You’ll find an abundance of useful features, like meditation timers, in-app support messages, an ever-growing audio library, and daily reminders to help bring your mindfulness practice into your life.
“Waking Up is, hands down, the most important meditation guide I’ve ever used.” Physician Peter Attia
“If you’ve had trouble getting into meditation, this app is your answer!” -Susan Cain, best-selling author
“Waking Up is not an app, it’s a path. It is equal parts a meditation guide, a philosophy master-class and a highly-focused TED Conference.” -Eric Hirschberg, former CEO of ACTIVISION

I got into Waking Up when a work meditation group used it for it's Intro to Meditation course. Now I can't imagine living without it for some of its other content - the daily Moments that pull me back into a contemplative state, the David White poetry, and most recently the new Oliver Burkman content on time management. It's a great alternative to flipping on a podcast when I'm driving to work, and I usually also listen to something in the morning when sipping tea. Thank you for your good work!

Great app with a lot of wisdom in it! It has changed my mindset and introduced me to meditation. I like how the introduction is, it makes it easier not to get lost or overwhelmed by the content. One think the could work on is the search feature. I feel like I can never find things on the topics I want, even if I know they are there. On top of that it pulls up what I have already listened to first which is fine but most of the time it is unrelated to what I am searching for.

This can be a truly life-changing app if you put in the short amount of time each day, or even every 3rd day. The guided meditation practices, the theory and the conversations are what set Waking Up apart from the other mediation apps. Sam is really giving you the tools needed to make lasting changes in your life. I can't recommend it enough. Big fan here, big fan.

Amazing content and we all know Sam has a great approach to meditation. However, a major fault is that this app crashes constantly on my android. It's had this problem for years now. Just a lot of weird bugs when it comes to playing content on the app and running it in the background. For example, it won't show that I'm playing anything on my lock screen. Another issue is that it doesn't sync well with my carplay and won't show accurate time stamps (probably a related problem). Rooting for ya!

Very much appreciate Sam's work, one of the best in breaking it down, communicating superbly. The app, I concur with others, has buffering issues...spinning waiting for downloads is frustrating when you are ready to use it. Also feel the price is tad to much, so a missed opportunity for those who will pass it up due to that.

Wonderful app, life changing for me. Much better than other meditation apps I have tried before, i.e., headspace and calm. Waking up is not just a set of cookie cutter repetitive sessions. Instead, each meditation session is customized. Also, the app includes deep lessons about topics such as death, solving problems, free will, the mystery of being, etc. The meditations and lessons form a coherent set guiding the user towards mindfulness based on Sam Harris's experience and philosophy.

It's a good place to be. The team that is working on the app is receptive to feedback. I thought the conversations were a bit slow, so I asked if they could add a feature that let me speed those up, but probabaly not the meditations. Lo and behold, it happened. Great team. The app keeps getting better. Good programing, my dudes.

I've been trying to develop a mediation habit for years. I've downloaded a bunch of apps in the process, and some have worked okay, but I've never been able to get over the hump of feeling like it was something I *had* to do and steadily devolving into doing the bare minimum. This is the first time I've found myself looking forward to meditating every day. The quality control is excellent, the slow but steady expansion of material -- it's far and away the best mediation experience I've ever had.
