Al-Mumtahanah (Arabic: الممتحنة‎, translated "She That Is To Be Examined", "Examining Her") is the 60th chapter (surah) of the Quran, a Medinan / Madani sura with 13 verses.

Names:
The chapter name al-Mumtahanah means "She Who Is To Be Examined". Quranic commentators Mahmud al-Alusi (d. 1854) and Abu 'Abdullah Al-Qurtubi (d. 1273) mentioned that this refers to Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah who was the subject of several of its verses. The chapter is also called al-Imtihan ("The Examining"): according to Al-Qurtubi, this is because the chapter examines the fault of mankind. It is also called al-Mawaddah ("The Affection"), because the first verse includes the phrase "you offer them affection", and the seventh includes "God will forge affection", and because affection of the Muslims is one of the themes in the chapter.

Content:
The first verse warns Muslims not to make alliance with the enemies of God. Verses 4—6 provide Abraham as a model for this, as he distanced himself from the pagans of his own tribe, including his own father. Verses 7 to 9 declares a possibility that Muslims and their erstwhile enemy might have better relations ("It may be that God will forge affection between you and those of them with whom you are in enmity") if the former enemy stops fighting the Muslims. These verses provide basis for the relations of Muslims and non-Muslims according to the Quran (Qur'an / Quraan / AlQuran / Mushaf): the basic relation is peace unless the Muslims are attacked, or when war is justified to stop injustice or protect the religion.

The next following verses (10–12) address some matters of Islamic law. They declare marriages between Muslims and polytheists are no longer valid, and instruct Muslims on how to resolve the question of mahr when dissolving such marriages.

According to the Islamic tradition, Al-Mumtahana is a Medinan (Madani / Madni) sura, that is a chapter that is revealed after Muhammad's hijra to Medina. According to The Study Quran (Al-Quran / Koran / Kuran), the revelation likely took place at some point after the 6th year after the hijra (AH) or 628 CE.

It is narrated from Imam Ali Zainul Abideen (a.s.) that if a person recites this Surah in any of his prayers (salaat), his heart will become filled with faith and belief. On the Day of Judgement, all the believing men and women will pray for him to be forgiven by Allah (S.w.T.).
Recitation of this Surah increases the acuity of vision and protects the reciter and his children from insanity. The Holy Prophet (S) has said that angels send salutations and pray for the forgiveness of the one who recites this Surah. If he dies on that day then he will have died as a martyr. Drinking water in which this Surah has been dissolved also acts as a cure for some ailments.

i) Whoso recites this surah regularly in his obligatory and supererogatory salats (salah / solat / namaz), Allah would fill his heart with belief, make his eyes bright, increase his intelligence, keep poverty, destitution in sanity from him.
ii) Whoso recites this surah angels seek forgiveness and safety for him; if he dies on the same day he would die a martyr, and believers would seek his intercession on the day of reckoning.
iii) Whoso writes this surah on a china plate, washes it with clean water and drinks it (three consecutive days) no disease of spleen would afflict him, and it would cure if he is suffering from any disease of spleen.

Imam Ali bin al-Husain (a.s.) said: One who recites Surah Mumtahena in his obligatory and recommended prayer (salaah / salaat), Allah examines his heart for belief, and brightens his sight and he is never ever afflicted with poverty, madness in himself or his children.
