هو أبرز كتب الحديث النبوي عند المسلمين من أهل السنة والجماعة. صنّفه الإمام محمد بن إسماعيل البخاري واستغرق في تحريره ستة عشر عاماً، وانتقى أحاديثه من ستمائة ألف حديث جمعها، ويحتلّ الكتاب مكانة متقدمة عند أهل السنّة حيث إنه أحد الكتب الستّة التي تعتبر من أمهات مصادر الحديث عندهم، وهو أوّل كتاب مصنّف في الحديث الصحيح المجرّد كما يعتبر لديهم أصحّ كتاب بعد القرآن الكريم.(1) ويعتبر كتاب صحيح البخاري أحد كتب الجوامع وهي التي احتوت على جميع أبواب الحديث من العقائد والأحكام والتفسير والتاريخ والزهد والآداب وغيرها.

اكتسب الكتاب شهرة واسعة في حياة الإمام البخاري فروي أنه سمعه منه أكثر من سبعين ألفاً، وامتدت شهرته إلى الزمن المعاصر ولاقى قبولاً واهتماماً فائقين من العلماء فألفت حوله الكتب الكثيرة من شروح ومختصرات وتعليقات ومستدركات ومستخرجات وغيرها مما يتعلّق بعلوم الحديث، حتى نقل بعض المؤرخين أن عدد شروحه وحدها بلغ أكثر من اثنين وثمانين شرحاً.
