লোকবিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী, ভারতের আদিকবি বাল্মীকি রামায়ণ রচনা করেছিলেন।ভারতীয় সংস্কৃতিতে এই ব্যাপারে কোনো দ্বিমত নেই যে রামের সমসাময়িক তথা এই মহাকাব্যের অন্যতম চরিত্র ঋষি বাল্মীকি স্বয়ং এই মহাকাব্য রচনা করেছিলেন।সংস্কৃত ভাষায় রচিত রামায়ণের মূল পাঠটি বাল্মীকি রামায়ণ নামে পরিচিত। এই গ্রন্থের রচনাকাল আনুমানিক খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব চতুর্থ শতাব্দী।হিন্দু ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী, রামায়ণ-উপাখ্যানের পটভূমি ত্রেতাযুগ নামে পরিচিত পৌরাণিক সময়কাল।
রামায়ণ সাতটি কাণ্ড বা খণ্ডে বিভক্ত। যথা: আদিকাণ্ড বা বালকাণ্ড, অযোধ্যাকাণ্ড, অরণ্যকাণ্ড, কিষ্কিন্ধ্যাকাণ্ড, সুন্দরকাণ্ড, লঙ্কাকাণ্ড বা যুদ্ধকাণ্ড ও উত্তরকাণ্ড। এই সপ্তকাণ্ডে রামের জীবনকথা কালানুক্রমিকভাবে বর্ণিত হয়েছে।আদিকাণ্ড-এ বর্ণিত হয়েছে রামের জন্ম, শৈশব ও সীতার সহিত বিবাহের কথা; অযোধ্যাকাণ্ড-এ বর্ণিত হয়েছে রামের রাজ্যাভিষেক প্রস্তুতি ও তাঁর বনগমনের কথা; তৃতীয় খণ্ড অরণ্যকাণ্ড-এ বর্ণিত হয়েছে রামের বনবাসের কথা ও রাবণ কর্তৃক সীতাহরণের বৃত্তান্ত; চতুর্থ খণ্ড কিষ্কিন্ধ্যাকাণ্ড-এ বর্ণিত হয়েছে হনুমান ও রামের মিলন, রামের সহায়তায় বানররাজ বালী হত্যা এবং বালীর কনিষ্ঠ ভ্রাতা সুগ্রীবের কিষ্কিন্ধ্যার রাজ্যাভিষেক; পঞ্চম খণ্ড সুন্দরকাণ্ড-এ বর্ণিত হয়েছে হনুমানের বীরত্বগাথা, তাঁর লঙ্কাগমন ও সীতার সহিত সাক্ষাতের কথা; রাম ও রাবণের যুদ্ধ বর্ণিত হয়েছে ষষ্ঠ খণ্ড লঙ্কাকাণ্ড-এ; সর্বশেষ খণ্ড উত্তরকাণ্ড-এর মূল উপজীব্য রাম ও সীতার পুত্র লব ও কুশের জন্মবৃত্তান্ত, তাঁদের রাজ্যাভিষেক ও রামের ধরিত্রী ত্যাগ।
