It’s one thing to show recommendations from apps and services I have. But this latest update to the home screen is just ads. The fact that there isn’t a way to disable it is even worse. Adding on to the problem is that some of the ads play video with sound! I did not buy a tv to have advertisements on the Home Screen. Come on Google and do the right thing. Either get rid of the new ads at the top of the screen or give us the option to turn them off.

Ditto. Before the latest release the took over the top bar with ads, this launcher was good. Smooth, clean, responsive, intuitive. With the addition of all the ads for content NOT appropriate for my kids to even see ads for! I have FIRED this app and replaced it with the ATV launcher paid version. It's not as featureful, but it's clean and orderly and OMG NO ADs! Google... well you're money grubbing bastards so I suppose I can't expect more. But NVidia! Really? I'm paying a premium for your Shield device why do this to me?!

Android TV started adding ads to the home page that can't be removed/hidden/moved. Wished I didn't pay so much for a TV that was just going to start having ads forced on my menus within a few months. I don't care if an app wants to promote their content on that specific app's row, but this is just additional google ads placed at the top of the home screen. Doesn't matter how clean/pretty it looks, this is just a bait&switch after having already paid a lot for the product.

Everyone keep clear of Nvidia Shield until this has a solution as Google has forced ads onto a minimalist looking interface that you pay a premium to get. I can see ads on a $30 or $40 unit but not on something that you pay $200 for. Give us an easy way to turn this off or believe me my planned upgrade for the rest of the TVs will be going to something that has no ads like Apple TVos which I really don't want to do but will. I don't want to see ads of shows that I don't have time to watch or explore. I know what I want to watch when I turn on my tv I don't need suggestions taking up the entire screen of things I don't want to watch.

I bought an android TV device specifically to avoid the advertising-infested interfaces presented by the likes of Fire TV. Until recently, I was able to have exactly that: a home screen with what I choose to put on it, nothing more, nothing less. Imagine my dismay when, after the latest update, I'm presented with--you guessed it--advertising that takes up a huge amount of screen space and cannot be turned off, unlike every other element of the home screen. The screenshot currently shown in the store page is not at all representative of the home screen as it stands today. This is a scummy, underhanded move.

Can't believe how much faith I lost in Android TV with the latest update and the unkillable Staff Picks row. I specifically sought out and paid for a more expensive Sony TV to avoid Roku homescreen ads, believing that part of the premium price I was paying was to have reasonable control over the home screen experience. I'm working around it by disabling updates and avoiding the Android TV Home update but as you well know that's a terrible option for security and overall experience.

What should be a cool, useful, customizeable television UI is instead reduced to yet another vehicle for shoving ads in your face, taking over a truly offensive 1/3 of your screen in the process. The update that introduced this is now part of the system software on Sony televisions and cannot be removed via 'uninstall updates', and of course you cannot install a different default launcher either. To reclaim the top 1/3 of my screen I had to remove my television from my network and perform a factory reset. I will not be putting this television back on my network, so now my new 'smart' android TV functions as little more than a monitor for other components. Absolute garbage, zero stars.

An excellent app in general, and the last update before the advertisement and suggestion update made it pretty much perfect. However, the homescreen ads that were released in a more or less recent update have made it a pain to use. My advice: In some cases it is possible to revert the Android TV Home updates to a point where the advertisements are not available. Googling "Turn Off Android TV Homescreen Ads" will give you several guides to see if you can attempt to revert it. Best of luck, and I hope that Google realizes that their users dislike ads in the homescreen! If I become aware of an update that gets rid of homescreen ads and suggestions, I will change this to a five star review, since I really love Android TV, and this app is otherwise great.
