Ear training can be easy and fun! With a right approach.

Have you (or one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear?

It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.

Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it?

Imagine you could understand music… It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.

One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called “Functional Ear Trainer” and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's ear training method to learn to recognize tones.

The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.

And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter:
– who you are – an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician;
– how old you are – a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult;
– what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).

The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day.

I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed an Android app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

Download this app right now, and have fun with your ear training!

The app and the method are excellent, compared to interval identification drills, which have little use in the real world, this app teaches you ear training in the way the ear really works. At its price, it’s a total steal. I recommend coupling it with singing and chord progression exercises for a full workout. My only (minor :D) nitpick is the RNG (sometimes I get 9/20 of one note for instance), I’d recommend implementing a bag randomizer like in Tetris, but custom exercises fix the problem

I'm not a musician and I thought recognizing musical notes was something for gifted mutants until I tried this app. I'm still pinching myself like "holy cow, is this really happening??" I'm getting good at it pretty fast, and it's so fun and *easy*! I'm starting to think that picking up an instrument might actually be doable after this. Super grateful to the app author and the method author for the learning _and_ confidence boost their work has given me. Thank you so much!

This is the only "ear training" app I've ever used where it feels like I can actually improve. I think it's because it stays in the same octave so I can get acquainted with the quality of the degrees but also it always plays the scale notes to the root, which becomes a jingle in my head that is associated to that scale degree. Then I tried a multi-octave challenge and yep I can hear the scale jingle in any octave. Of course I'm not good at it yet but finally I think I can make progress!

Simple, intuitive, clean... effective! I am loving the app. Paid version is worth it: you can listen and watch hands-free and just train mentally if your hands are busy with dishes, etc. And you can listen to harmonic intervals from the very start and get good at distinguishing multiple notes at the same time. The approach is very purposeful and it works for me! I'm glad you made the app. Thank you. :)

Great ear training app! A couple suggestions- 1) Have the option to hide your current score as you're guessing tones - that way you can simply focus on the ear training and not get upset/anxious about your score. See the score at the end. (For now, I've been covering part of the screen with a piece of paper). 2) Make the distribution of tones more even - I find that I'm being tested on flat 3 much less than other tones - almost 20% less. (I emailed you about this but never got a response).

Hats off to Functional Ear training. I have never had a musical ear, but things they are changing. I have downloaded other ear training apps, but found them just too complicated. This app does what it says. Starts on the very basic and slowly builds( talking for myself hear), that elusive " musical ear." Still fairly early days for me but getting there .Really enjoying this app, and it's pretty addictive. Well done to the developers, amazing app.

I started with the free app, and it's fantastic. I updated to the paid features and I am really enjoying the "Listen" feature. I don't need to tap the screen anymore, but for some of the exercises I don't even need to look at the screen. I've been using this on a Samsung phone for a couple years. Is it possible to transfer the app user files to a Samsung tablet? I don't want to lose my statistics or custom exercises.

Great app! It would be great if it would be allowed to change cadence in the 'basic levels' like you can do in the custom levels. Another recommendation is theory for solfege and for ear training should be more.
