SimpleX - the first messaging platform that has no user identifiers of any kind - 100% private by design!

Security assessment by Trail of Bits: https://simplex.chat/blog/20221108-simplex-chat-v4.2-security-audit-new-website.html

SimpleX Chat features:
- end-to-end encrypted messages, with editing, replies and deletion.
- disappearing messages with opt-out per contact/group.
- NEW message reactions.
- NEW delivery receipts, with opt-out per contact.
- multiple chat profiles, with hidden profiles.
- app access and self-destruct passcodes.
- incognito mode - unique to SimpleX Chat.
- sending end-to-end encrypted images and files.
- voice messages up to 5 minutes – also end-to-end encrypted.
- "live" messages – they update for all recipients as you type them, every few seconds - unique to SimpleX Chat.
- single-use and long-term user addresses.
- secret chat groups - only group members know it exists and who is the member.
- end-to-end encrypted audio and video calls.
- connection security code verification, for contacts and group members – to protect from man-in-the-middle attacks (e.g. invitation link substitution).
- private instant notifications.
- encrypted portable chat database - you can transfer your chat contacts and history to another device.
- animated images and "stickers" (e.g., from GIF and PNG files and from 3rd party keyboards).

SimpleX Chat advantages:
- privacy of your identity, profile, contacts and metadata: unlike any other existing messaging platform, SimpleX uses no phone numbers or any other identifiers assigned to the users - not even random numbers. This protects the privacy of who you are communicating with, hiding it from SimpleX platform servers and from any observers.
- complete protection against spam and abuse: as you have no identifier on SimpleX platform, you cannot be contacted unless you share a one-time invitation link or an optional temporary user address.
- full ownership, control and security of your data: SimpleX stores all user data on client devices, the messages are only held temporarily on SimpleX relay servers until they are received.
- decentralized proxied peer-to-peer network: you can use SimpleX Chat via your own relay servers and still communicate with people using pre-configured or any other SimpleX relay servers.
- fully open-source code.

You can connect to anybody you know via link or scan QR code (in the video call or in person) and start sending messages instantly - no emails, phone numbers or passwords needed.

Your profile and contacts are only stored in the app on your device - relay servers do not have access to this information.

All messages are end-to-end encrypted using open-source double-ratchet protocol; the messages are delivered via relay servers using open-source SimpleX Messaging Protocol.

This app may or may not work if you have Android 8 (minimum requirement). For me it keeps crashing immediately when I try to open it, and I've sent in a crash reports after updates. However I like the concept of the app, and hopefully it'll be fully functional on all Android 8 devices at some point. Edit 9/2024: Similar issue is still happening; a white or black screen appears on startup and nothing else happens. I saw a SimpleX comment on another review saying this is an issue with Android 8.

***please consider the ability to have in chat/conversation notification sound. A sound while you're chatting and you receive a message. Great app. Easy to get started, and works! Love that it works perfectly without google (play services/cloud messaging). It does use a bit more battery than I'd like. The two biggest things: better battery usage and in chat/convo notification sounds. Thank you for everything you guys are doing. Keep it up

Needs optimisations on battery side. Also, the pc app should be improved for better cross platform usability. We should be able to use the mobile app and PC app at the same time. Moreover, when you drag and drop an image into PC app, it sends as file, not as pic, which is kinda annoying. I also would like to have the option to hide the notification when I set the message notifications to *instant*. That said, the app has been steadily improving quite fast, full support :)

Perfect. Just need ability to force delete for everyone. Since now u can delete only for yourself chats. That seems not very secure if someone can force save messages and later usem them as proof sending from that account. Idk 😅. But overall very good app. Currently most secure app

Honestly, a bit overkill for most people . Don't get me wrong , I love it . But you will not have easy conversations with non tech savvy people. If you are considering this , you need too consider upgrading your environment as well . Custom ROM , and divorcing Google. It does what it does very well though and should be the go-to when signal becomes not trusted anymore .

It's very secure and easy to sign in and use. I love that we can change the appearance and colors, but we can't still do that with the texts, they have to be just black, I hope we can have that option in the future.

The most polished UI I ever saw, it looks like a mature app and not some buggy jank like element does. The protocol concept is awesome, and a lot of expected features (incl. the unique live typing) are already complete and just work, with others (channels, bigger groups, device sync even) being worked on. I've no idea what some of the other reviews are on about when they complain about the setup. It all makes sense and works perfectly fine?. Maybe they're old, and the situation improved, idk

In the past it happened many times that either i or the recepient don't receive the messages. For awhile everything worked great. But now, again, my messages aren't arriving to the destination.
