পথের পাঁচালী, প্রখ্যাত সাহিত্যিক বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় রচিত একটি উপন্যাস। দুই ভাইবোন অপু আর দুর্গার বেড়ে ওঠা নিয়েই এই বিখ্যাত পথের পাঁচালী উপন্যাস। পরবর্তী কালে বিখ্যাত চলচ্চিত্র পরিচালক সত্যজিৎ রায় এই উপন্যাসটি কাহিনী অবলম্বনে পথের পাঁচালী চলচ্চিত্র নির্মান করেন এবং এটি পৃথিবী বিখ্যাত হয়।

নিশ্চিন্তপূর, প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামাঞ্চলে অপু ও তার পরিবারের জীবনযাত্রার কথাই পথের পাঁচালী উপন্যাস এর মুখ্য বিষয়। পুরোহিত হরিহর রায় নিশ্চিন্দিপুরের পৈতৃক ভিটেয় তার পরিবার নিয়ে বসবাস করেন। অপু ও দুর্গা হরিহর রায়ের দুই সন্তান। হরিহর রায় পেশায় একজন পুরোহিত এবং আয় খুবই নগন্য। হরিহর অত্যন্ত সহজ সরল তাই সকলে সহজেই তাকে ঠকায়।

ভাইবোন অপু ও দুর্গার মধ্যে খুব ভাব। দুর্গা দিদি, সে অপুকে খুবই ভালবাসে। আবার মাঝেমধ্যে অপুকে খেপিয়ে তুলে। দুই ভাই-বোন কখনও কখনও চুপচাপ গাছতলায় বসে থাকে, কখনও মিঠাইওয়ালার পিছু ছোটে, আবার কখনও ভ্রাম্যমাণ বায়োস্কোপ ওয়ালার বায়োস্কোপ দেখে বা যাত্রাপালা দেখে। সন্ধ্যাবেলায় তারা দূরাগত ট্রেনের হুইসেল শুনতে পেয়ে আনন্দ পায়।

গ্রামে ভাল উপার্জন নেই তাই হরিহর একটা ভাল কাজের আশায় শহরে যান। তার স্ত্রী সর্বজয়াকে তিনি প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়ে যান যে, ভাল উপার্জন করে ফিরে এসে পুরান ভাঙা বসতবাড়িটাকে সারিয়ে তুলবেন। হরিহরের অনুপস্থিতিতে তার সংসারে অর্থসংকট তীব্রতর হয়। হরিহর শহরে যাওয়ার জন্য সর্বজয়া খুবই একাকিত্ব বোধ করেন ও স্বভাব খিটখিটে হয়ে য়ায়। একদিন দুর্গা অনেকক্ষণ বৃষ্টিতে ভিজে এবং জ্বর হয়। ওষুধ না খাওয়াতে পারায় দুর্গার জ্বর বেড়েই চলে ও শেষে মারা যায়। একদিন হরিহর শহর থেকে ফিরে আসেন। সর্বজয়া প্রথমে চুপ করে থাকেন পরে কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়েন। হরিহর তখন বুঝতে পারেন যে, তার একমাত্র কন্যাকে তিনি হারিয়েছে। তারা কঠিন সিদ্ধান্ত নেন, তারা গ্রাম ছেড়ে অন্য কোথাও চলে যাবেন। যাত্রার তোড়জোড় শুরু হলে অপু তার দিদি দুর্গার চুরি করা পুঁতির মালা খুঁজে পায়। অপু মালাটা ডোবার জলে ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দেয় এবং বাবা-মায়ের সঙ্গে নতুন এক গন্তব্যের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা শুরু করে।

Pather Panchali is a novel written by renowned literary Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. This famous Pather Panchali novel is about the upbringing of two siblings Apu and Durga. Later, the famous film director Satyajit Ray made the novel Pather Panchali based on the story and it became world famous.

The main theme of Pather Panchali's novel is the life of Apu and his family in Nishchintapur, a remote rural area. Priest Harihar Roy lives with his family at his ancestral home in Nishchindipur. Apu and Durga are the two children of Harihar Roy. Harihar Roy is a priest by profession and his income is negligible. Harihar is very simple so everyone easily cheats on him.

Siblings Apu and Durga are very close. Durga Sister, she loves Apu very much. Sometimes Apu gets angry again. The two siblings sometimes sit quietly under a tree, sometimes chasing after the sweetheart, sometimes watching the traveling Bioscope Director's Bioscope or watching the Drama. In the evening they rejoice to hear the whistle of a distant train.

There is no good income in the village so Harihar goes to the city in the hope of a good job. He promised his wife, Sarvajaya, that he would return with a good income and repair the old broken house. In Harihar's absence, the financial crisis in his family intensified. Sarvajaya feels very lonely to go to Harihar town and his temper becomes irritable. One day Durga gets wet and fever in the rain for a long time. Unable to take medicine, Durga developed fever and eventually died. One day Harihar came back from the city. Sarvajaya was silent at first and then broke down in tears. Harihar then realizes that he has lost his only daughter. They make a tough decision; they will leave the village and go somewhere else. When the journey started, Apu found the stolen beaded necklace of his sister Durga. Apu throws the necklace into the sinking water and sets off with her parents for a new destination.
